AMON AMARTH‘s epic anthems of Norse mythology continue with Surtur Rising, their eighth studio release.
Surtur Rising was touted as the most anticipated metal release of 2011. And there’s no reason to think that the melodic death metal band has run out of things to write about. There’s an abundant source of material on Norse and Viking mythology for the band to choose from. The way AMON AMARTH creates their lyrics, music and artwork is far from boring. However, there is a certain formula that they do follow. I wouldn’t say it’s predictable, just … comfortable.
Don’t get me wrong, nobody in the genre does it better than AMON AMARTH, but how far can they take their brand of metal? It’s an enjoyable CD, rather good actually, but not as accessible as Twilight of the Thunder God or With Oden On Our Side. There are some good musical hooks, but there’s no signature song to catch you or stand out as the most memorable. But there’s something good about all 10 tracks. There’s no guest performers as on Twilight, with the exception of local musicians and an orchestra. As always, Johan Söderberg and Olavi Mikkonen deliver tasty melodic guitar leads. Tom Thiel’s cover art depicting the mythological leader of the fire giants of Muspelheim, Surtur, is fantastic.
Their now-classic guitar sound, along with Goliath-like throatman Johan Hegg’s ferocious growls, open “War of the Gods.” Their use of melody mixed with aggression is still one of AMON AMARTH‘s strengths. The cinematic structure in the middle section and the spoken-word war mantra are nice touches.
The atypical AMON AMARTH religious lyrical standpoint of “Slaves of Fear,” the fiery pace and anguished screams of “Destroyer of the Universe” and the crunchy riffs of “Wrath of the Norsemen” fulfill the AMON AMARTH trademark sound. The orchestral interludes of “For Victory or Death” and “Doom Over Dead Man” is something that they haven’t done before, and it works well.
Surtur Rising is exactly what to expect from this Swedish Viking horde. They’ve pretty much stuck to their trademark formula, and that’s exactly what you would want in an AMON AMARTH release.
